Housing Advisers Programme - Better futures for vulnerable people, Somerset

Frustrated at the rising numbers of vulnerable people struggling to access homes and support that met their needs, the Somerset Strategic Housing Group (SSHG) decided we needed to crack the problem. But where to start?

OPE: Develop relocatable homes for adult social care clients (Dorset)

Growing demand for specialist homes for adult social care clients, coupled with a lack of available property led Dorset Council to use surplus public land for ‘meanwhile use’ to meet this urgent need. The OPE programme supported this pioneering scheme which has seen temporary, relocatable and adaptable homes developed for adults with learning disabilities, mental health issues or physical impairments.

OPE: Deliver affordable housing on complex sites (Brighton)

Brighton is physically constrained with a short supply of vacant land for housing, coupled with high housing demand. With Land Release Funding and OPE support the local authority has unlocked a series of complex, unviable council-owned sites - and delivered 84 award-winning, affordable homes. Civic pride has increased and anti-social behaviour reduced from the regenerative effect.

OPE: Redevelop under-utilised public sector buildings (Waltham Forest)

Waltham Forest had an ambitious vision to develop a public services campus from their historic, but tired, town hall, and to provide much needed housing on vacated, surplus sites. OPE support, and Land Release Fund funding enabled the local authority, HM Courts and Tribunals Service and the National Probation Service to bring their complex programme to fruition, redeveloping public estate for over 500 homes, alongside new hospitality, leisure, and learning spaces.

Liverpool – speeding up the development of potentially contaminated land

Potential land contamination may affect any development site and it is a pre-commencement requirement for these risks to be assessed. Developers appoint environmental consultants to undertake investigations and provide them with advice; however in many cases the quality of investigations carried out can vary (often due to commercial pressures from developers when tendering for work).

The West of England Planning Toolkit 2012

The four West of England authorities (Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset) and the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership have jointly published a planning toolkit to promote a more positive and consistent approach to handling large scale and complex development proposals.

Wellingborough - Stanton Cross Sustainable Urban Extension

The Borough Council of Wellingborough is progressing the development of a 360 hectare Sustainable Urban Extension site. The development represents a £500 million investment, anticipated to create between six and seven thousand local jobs and 200 construction jobs. Investment in infrastructure totals £80 million and includes a new railway station and a new 1000 space car park.
