The LGA Independent Group Executive Committee is the governing body of the Independent Group. Together with the Group Leader, Deputy Leader and Treasurer, its appointed members, steer the Group's work, focusing in particular on coordinating policy.

Attending a meeting

The Independent Group Executive Committee has an open invitation for Group members to attend a meeting of their Executive Committee. Attendance at an Executive Committee meeting is a useful opportunity for members to learn more about the work of the Group and the LGAMembers are asked to cover their own travel costs. These meetings take place every six weeks, at the LGA offices in London. Dates and times of upcoming meeting are as follows:

Councillor Marianne Overton, MBE, Leader

Elected Leader of the LGA Independent Group

Lincolnshire County Council and North Kesteven District Council

She is a Group Leader, providing mentoring and ensuring the proper engagement of other members. She is currently on the Planning Committee for NKDC and a past Chairman. Marianne is particularly active on environmental issues, health and social care and education. Her recent election vote was the highest in Lincolnshire and she is well known for her community engagement and determination to represent people directly, regardless of party politics.

Her education was spread between South Africa and London and she went to Kings College (part of the London University) to obtain an honours degree in Zoology in 1980. She also holds a post graduate qualification in Education.

Marianne currently works for NHS Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust as a Non-Executive Director. She is also Governor of the University of Lincoln and Director of Biosearch, organising expeditions to remote Third World regions, to carry out field research for conservation management. Previously she has worked in secondary schools. She has also been involved in numerous health bodies and was instrumental in leading the growth of Relate Lincolnshire, which she helped turn from a failing position to one of strength. She is a qualified biologist and an occasional visiting lecturer at universities.

Her long running and extensive experience in a range of fields and professions has given her a background of sound communication in education, scientific training and practices that helps in analysing data, experience in management of organisations with substantial budgets, voluntary organisations and small business, as well as an excellent awareness of the fundamental needs of communities. She was a runner up in the Grantham Business Person of the Year Award in 2003.

Elected Deputy-Leader of the LGA Independent Group

Cambridgeshire County Council and Huntingdonshire District Council

Peter is a Group leader on Cambridgeshire County Council and is Chairman of the Resources and Performance Overview and Scrutiny Committee and is also a group leader on Huntingdonshire District Council where he sits on the Development management panel and Economic Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Peter is also proud to be a member of Ramsey Town Council.

Graduating from Bournemouth University, Peter has a strong career background in sales management and business management both in the retail and construction sectors.

Currently working as a constituency manager for Stuart Agnew MEP, Member of the European Parliament for the East of England has given Peter a well-grounded front line understanding of the political landscape and the needs of constituents both in rural and urban communities.

Peter is the National Nominating Officer and National spokesman on local government for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and Independent Group elected Member. Representing the East of England region

Councillor Bob Dutton OBE

Elected Treasurer of the LGA Independent Group

Wrexham County Borough Council

As well as being a long established councillor, Bob is trained as a Chartered Civil Engineer. He is a member of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives. Bob served as a Deputy Leader and Leader of the Independent Group at Wrexham County Borough Council from 1999 to 2011, with lead member responsibility for Communities and Cohesion, Culture and Leisure. He is currently a member of the Democratic Independent Group in the Council and a portfolio holder for Environment and Transport since 2012.

Bob served as a local Government Officer with Wrexham Rural District Council and Wrexham Maelor Borough Council from 1959 through 1995 in various posts, dealing with Civil Engineering, Town Planning, Industrial Development and Promotion, Urban regeneration and Human Resources. He has also worked on promoting the borough in North America, Europe, India, China and Japan.

Bob was Chief Executive at Wrexham Maelor Borough Council between 1988 - 1995. He helped establish Wrexham Itec in 1983 and was a Board Member of companies providing training and specialising in Technology Transfer through the North East Wales Institute (now Glyndwr University).

Bob is Chair of the Mersey/Dee Alliance for 2013/2014.

Bob is currently a member of the LGA Independent Group Executive in the capacity of Treasurer and has been in post since 2005.

In 1991 Bob was awarded an OBE.
